The New Jersey Knowledge Initiative is important to small business in New Jersey. Therefore, we are writing to you directly to voice our need for this program. Based on the new Economic Growth Strategy for the State of New Jersey, our companies represent the very small and startup high-tech businesses New Jersey wants and needs, and we need the New Jersey Knowledge Initiative. We have learned that the NJKI will end on June 30, 2007 if funding is not continued, but we hope you will find funds to keep NJKI going.

Many states offer assistance to small business in the form of finance, office and lab space, and consulting on starting and growing a business. The New Jersey Knowledge Initiative demonstrates that New Jersey recognizes and addresses specific needs of small high tech businesses, especially those working on biotechnology and stem cell research, clinical trials, and other areas of engineering and applied science. We are very grateful to Senator Bryant and Assemblyman Greenwald for their initial sponsorship of the Knowledge Initiative.

To compete successfully, we must have access to the best possible information that is only available in very expensive top medical and scientific scholarly journals. The journals we need and can now access only because of the Knowledge Initiative cost from $200 - $20,000 per year per title. Before the NJKI, we used precious time and resources to track down critical information, often traveling to major universities or purchasing these articles, both at great cost to our companies. This program now gives us reliable, convenient access to this literature. Moreover, we can rely on professional librarians across the state to assist us in navigating the very complex world of scholarly scientific and reliable business literature.

Another major concern we share is finding the qualified, highly skilled workforce that is required for businesses like ours. The NJKI is an excellent, efficient way to support higher education, especially in science, technology, medicine and business, by delivering top resources to nearly all New Jersey colleges and universities.

New Jersey’s small businesses are well aware of the dire economic situation in New Jersey. As you seek ways to improve the state’s economy, NJKI must be recognized for the success it is and should be seen as a great investment for delivering a competitive advantage to hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs, researchers, and students throughout the whole state. We implore you to continue this highly valuable program, and we earnestly hope it will expand in future, better economic years to add critical market research information and expand content in other areas of engineering and applied research.

Please do not let our New Jersey Knowledge Initative end on June 30, 2007.
